What is a Producer?

A music producer’s role is to oversee and manage the recording (i.e. “production”) of an artist’s music. A producer has many roles that include, compositional assistance, gathering ideas for the project, selecting songs and/or musicians, coaching the artist and musicians in the studio, controlling the recording sessions, and supervising the entire process through mixing & mastering. Producers also often take on a wider entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, and negotiations.

Do I need one for my music?

YES! In most cases the music producer is a competent arranger, composer or songwriter who can bring fresh ideas to a project. As well as making any songwriting and arrangement adjustments, the producer is also in charge of the creative mix. They will liase with the sound engineer who concentrates on the technical aspects of recording, whereas the music producer keeps an eye on the overall projects marketability.

Ego vs Talent

Being that music creation is typically emotional & meaningful, most songwriters are attached to their art. An artists general belief is that their music is already highly marketable. To add further confusion, most songwriters will have friends & family encouraging them with a definite bias. Unfortunately, this muddies the water for the artists to genuinely gauge how ‘good’ their art is. (watch various talent show auditions for example!)

Before listening to any project with an artist, our first question is always the same. ‘Do you want truth or flattery?’ Our prime goal is to take an artists song to the highest level of marketability. Sometimes this requires subtle changes, at times sectional re-writing, and other times a serious overhaul. Rather than rework a song for the sake of reworking, our approach is to help the artist gauge when their song is ‘baked’ and complete.

Fletch is a graduate of the prestigious Australian Institute of Music in Sydney, Australia. He has been active performing, recording & writing in the industry for more than 20 years. He has been a Musical Director for numerous bands & ensembles, and played in a variety of musical genres from Pop, Alternative, Hard Rock, Jazz, Reggae, Country, Praise & Worship, Disco and many others granting him an unusually wide perspective and insight into contemporary music writing styles. He is an experienced guitarist, bassist, drum programmer, singer, arranger, recording, sound & mastering engineer.
